    freenas manual root filesystem

On any random disk, there are only two known locations: the beginning and the end. GPT puts a primary partition table at the beginning of the disk, and a secondary, backup partition table at the end of the disk. GPT is not meant to be used inside another partitioning scheme, either. That secondary partition table really is meant to go at the end of the device. GEOM providers like gmirror(8) put their metadata at the end of their data area, but that does not need to be a whole disk. So it's possible to have a GPT-partitioned disk with gmirror() devices inside it. The other way around, both want to use that last block of the disk. If the secondary GPT table is overwritten by gmirror() metadata, no big deal. If the gmirror() metadata is overwritten by a recovered or repaired GPT table, the mirror is damaged. Incidentally, the GPT boot code could be modified to look for a secondary GPT table inside another container rather than at the physical end of the device. In fact, Hiroki Sato posted an experimental patch that did just that a couple of years ago. But a disk formatted that way no longer complies with the GPT specifications, which state that the secondary table goes at the end of the device. Some people might not be too concerned about this, but it turns out that FreeBSD leans more toward strict compatibility with standards than with the looser compliance of other operating systems. Summary: gmirror(8) and GPT on full disks might compromise the increased data integrity that is the point of using a mirror. If the disks are 2 TB or less, use gmirror(8) and create an MBR partitioning scheme on the mirror. If the disks are larger than 2 TB, and enough memory is available, a ZFS mirror offers increased safety. If you really insist, gmirror(8) mirrors can be created between GPT partitions on different disks. It would be best to limit this to a single mirror to avoid the massive head contention of rebuilding multiple mirrors on the same drives.

I've created a gmirror volume on some 3 TB disks. I manually partitioned it from a FreeBSD 9.2 memory stick using gpart from the fixit console, as I wanted to clone it from another machine using a dump. My problem is, the box won't boot automatically. I end up having to manually specify the root filesystem. Manual root filesystem specification:List of GEOM managed disk devices:The same procedure worked countless times on 8.x, and I can't from the handbook decode if something has been changed to the loader. Can it be that I have to give a hint to the loader somewhere? Neither wins. Net result: use MBR for gmirror(8). The Handbook gmirror section talks about this in the introduction. See the end of the Metadata Issues section. MBR itself is not made to deal with devices larger than 2 TB. The loader does more strict tests for validity of disk structures on later versions of FreeBSD. The tests can be disabled:. I vaguely recall that the boot loader requires the root file system to be the first entry. But for this situation, I quickly need a super big volume, and I haven't played enough with ZFS yet to use that in production. I followed all the leads that you guys gave; for now, it has helped to add Maybe the new loader does not find partitions directly in a raw volume. I've never seen this happen, but then again I hardly use GPT. Again, thanks again And if so, if it could be written into a new device driver; something like gm0-GPT. And if so, if it could be configured to place multiple metadata files to read from somewhat like newfs does. Preferably only one per disk. However, any of these situations mixing the two are not widely used and not widely tested. Because of that, they do not have the degree of safety as high as the standard MBR configuration. This is not exactly a bug.

At first I could not mount root, I restored from its backup gpart file, gpart showed it as normal status, rebooted, and now the new disk not only is not bootable, it halts any machine booting even attached as secondary. I'm encouraged by the possibiliities of gpart to be enhanced, yet discouraged by this new type of failure I've not seen before. And frankly, in my mind's eye the responsibility is clearly in the FreeBSD guys' corner. And we're not talking about significant sizes here. So, how about Following the above approach all existing installations would continue to work without problems and for new installations we tell the users to use the new gpart switch to create the RAID information not in competition with GPT but right before GPT's backup table and properly in a new GPT partition type (so, for instance, admins could see right away what that chunk of data is and other eventual tools may properly work with it). Offhand, I don't know whether that can be compliant with the standards, or whether that could be extensible for general use. Ask on the freebsd-fs mailing list. That was a huge convenience back a decade ago (the latter concept that is). It supports numerous types of formatting, including MBR and even goofier formats used on non-x86 platforms. Putting the two copies of the GPT table near each other negates the additional safety that two copies provide. The end of the disk might survive if the start fails, and the other way around. But that is secondary, because locating the backup GPT table anywhere other than the end of the disk breaks the GPT specifications. That's important. Other GPT-compatible tools will not be able to find it if it is not in the location defined by the standard. It supports numerous types of formatting, including MBR and even goofier formats used on non-x86 platforms. Putting the two copies of the GPT table near each other negates the additional safety that two copies provide.

If you seriously super-really insist, GPT-partitioned drives can be mirrored with gmirror(8) by overwriting the secondary GPT table. This adds some risk. There is no backup of the primary GPT table. More seriously, the mirror metadata goes right where the secondary GPT is expected. The boot code normally complains about a corrupted backup table. No gpart show any longer because the GPT both were corrupted. Searching the shell history I found where many months ago the commands to create a similar disk were utilized, so I rewrote the boot MBR GPT, bootcode, and the disk was not bootable AND the Beastie menu gone. I tried mounting those, they had labels, but were not mountable until a reboot. I rebooted. Of course, per procedure the next step was to newfs into filesystems, but since the exact create-gpt commands were used for sizing, they had automagically been already- newfs 'd and could be mounted, and all the data was recovered. (This transpired since the post above posing the question.) So maybe gpart could be enhanced to search for the existing filesytems' newfs embedded data, and create the GPT partitions backwards from that, somewhat like editing legacy bsdlabel tables into a sysinstall bottom-menu next-todo semi-installer. And thanks for that information about mirroring GPT partitions etc. If you want to repartition, either modify the GPT partitions or back up, gpart destroy the GPT scheme, and gpart create -s mbr to create a real MBR partitioning scheme. That destroy step is important. Just creating a new MBR without destroying the GPT scheme leaves the backup GPT table in place, and confusing error messages result. While the uncoventional skipped-steps method above saved data at that point in time, its replacment has failed catastrophically, despite being made in the usual conventional manner.

The end of the disk might survive if the start fails, and the other way around. Whatever we come up with must be about our software RAID. How we (FreeBSD) do software raid is our business but GPT is a standard that must be respected. Whatever we come up with must be about our software raid. This is of course also a problem with disk controller manufacturers and their quality control, such changes in the disk geometry should not be possible when moving a disk from one controller to another. Similarly - and probably not coincidentally - other related areas (boot loaders, GRUB, anyone?) remind me more of a war zone (or a mental asylum?) than of seasoned professionals at work. Speaking of boot loaders, once more kudos to the BSD guys who quite generally are acting like seasoned professionals. Nevertheless, we must live with that standard, preferably in a smart way and keeping the original concept in mind.Considering that GPT offers plenty of partitions, and that GPT, at least for a good part, is pre kernel I'd prefer to go the partition way. One major advantage is that this is something that GPT understands; it's not something special, just yet another partition albeit a very small and somewhat exotic one (quite possibly only known to the FreeBSD GPT implementation).By continuing to use this site, you are consenting to our use of cookies. It may as well be fixed in FreeBSD 10.3, but that is still a few months ahead, so even if fixed there we'd have to look and see what caused this and provide a backport of the fix in our 16.1 series. Both dmesg dumps look ok, except for the former refusing to boot using the same layout.I've get arround by using the USB 2 internal connector to install opnsense. I guess it should work also with the card reader. Why were the old images pulled when they're the only apparently bootable ones on this platform? Older images (16.1) are available from all mirrors, e.g.: 15.x was outpaced too fast to keep the images around and since we're going to discontinue upgrade support next year for those who haven't upgraded for 2 years there isn't much reason to bring them back. Tunnel NFS through an encrypted protocol like Kerberos or (secure) VPN when dealing with sensitive data.

Without accurate clocks on all nodes, NFS can introduce unwanted delays.A good security practice is to define a NFS root in a discrete directory tree which will keep users limited to that mount point. Bind mounts are used to link the share mount point to the actual directory elsewhere on the filesystem.Note this may not be desirable if a child is shared with a different range of addresses. Being different from crossmnt, nohide still respects address ranges of child exports. This is particularly prevalent on headless servers. It is highly recommended to populate the entropy pool using a utility such as Rng-tools (if TPM is supported) or Haveged in these scenarios. No other port opening should be required:Otherwise mounting of remote share will hang. Again, the server's NFS export root is omitted. The wsize value is the number of bytes used when writing to the server. By default, if these options are not specified, the client and server negotiate the largest values they can both support (see nfs(5) for details). If neither option is specified (or if the hard option is specified), NFS requests are retried indefinitely. If the soft option is specified, then the NFS client fails a NFS request after retrans retransmissions have been sent, causing the NFS client to return an error to the calling application. As such, use the soft option only when client responsiveness is more important than data integrity. Using NFS over TCP or increasing the value of the retrans option may mitigate some of the risks of using the soft option. The default value for NFS over TCP is 600 (60 seconds). After the first timeout, the timeout value is doubled for each retry for a maximum of 60 seconds or until a major timeout occurs. If connecting to a slow server or over a busy network, better stability can be achieved by increasing this timeout value. If the retrans option is not specified, the NFS client tries each request three times.

Sometimes this happens when your VPS is powered off abruptly, or when a piece of software or hardware malfunctions suddenly. On FreeBSD many of these functions can be performed from single-user mode. In this tutorial we will go through the steps you can take to boot your FreeBSD droplet into single-user mode and how to use the tools there to attempt to recover a damaged filesystem. Implementing a reliable offsite backup solution and thoroughly testing it on a regular basis is the only way to guarantee the integrity of your important data. The fsck operation can occasionally cause data corruption on active disks.

Problems can still occur in cases of severe damage though, so consider these last-resort methods for data recovery. Once you are ready you can use the reboot command to reboot your droplet. You will now need to access your droplet via the console in the control panel. Once the reboot has completed you will find yourself at a very minimal shell similar to the one shown below: After a few seconds you should see a screen like this: First, lets make sure that we know what device we are checking. Running the command below will show the filesystems currently configured. Now you can run the following command to perform a filesystem check on this disk. If your droplet responds to your ssh connection and it was not before then this is a good sign. If you ran into specific problems earlier that alerted you to the possibility of corruption, you should try these operations again to see if they are successful. This is where fsck puts partially recovered files. Basically, it is a file without a name.Often, these are files that you had deleted anyways, but were still being used when the system crashed. It is worth checking them though to be sure. To do this, you will need to open a ticket with the support team so they can boot your droplet into the recovery environment. The success of your recovery operations comes down to a number of factors, such as how quickly the filesystem noticed the corruption, how widespread the issue was, and what files were affected. That being said, in many cases, fsck recovery is successful and you can go back to using your server without too much of a headache. Remember, keeping good backups is the most important step you can take to prevent data loss. We'd like to help. The default swap size in ZFS is 2G but reducing this still results in a failure. The install appears to go through properly but after a reboot we get this error. Loader variables. Good for laptops which might suddenly disconnect from the network. Towards the latter a Wants unit is added as well. This might avoid mount errors at boot time that do not arise when testing the unit. See systemd.automount(5) for details. The reason this method is preferable over the earlier one is that if the server is switched off, the client will not throw errors about being unable to find NFS shares. For example, the following command restores the previous default iosize of 32k. If so, is there any guideline for how many snapshots I can reasonably keep without causing problems or losing significant performance. Related question: will remove old snapshots from the root pool cause any problems with doing an incremental send from the root pool to the backup pool?... EDIT Thank you everyone for the responses. Im pretty happy with it. In case anyone else is in need of a tool to do the same, ill leave the code below. I think it is fully debugged and it works just fine on my system, though use at your own risk. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions feel free to let me know. Multiple RootDatasetName's can be given. If both flags are specified they cancel each other out. When you start running out of space. I use sanoid and syncoid to manage both my snapshots (creation and deletion) and sending the snapshots to my off-site zfs pool. But initially I did not setup up sanoid on my offsite zpool so the snapshots kept accumulating there. On the FreeBSD environment it took more then 35 minutes to list those snapshots. ZFS On Linux had a better performance or it was caused by the underlying hardware. It seems like 10,000 is a good upper limit based on a few replies to this post.

You don't need to write something to manage them -- sanoid is fantastic. I ended up writing a fairly thorough autoremoval function (code has been added to the original post) that Im quite happy with. I have systemd services setup to automate the hourly snapshots and to run the autoremoval code once per day.out of curiousity would sanoid offer any other functionality beyond this. You also don't really -need- automatic snapshots being taken when the system isn't actively being used (before and after business hours for SMBs). --For my daily use (iMac and Linux) a scheduled snapshot once a day (and at boot) kept for 7 days turned out to be sufficient. For certain other systems that were used less often, a daily snapshot that was kept for 28-31 days turned out to be pretty manageable. I wrote a bunch of scripts to help me manage a ZFS server; one of them was to delete snapshots for any given month name. --Also remember - for any anticipated heavy changes, you can always take a manual snap beforehand. It breaks up the snapshots into different brackets based on their age, and then it will either keep all snapshots (youngest age group) keep 1 per hour keep 1 per 3 hours keep 1 per 6 hours keep 1 per 12 hours keep 1 per day (oldest age group) There are also a bunch of flags for more fine-grained control. You're welcome to use it if you want.I think it is fully debugged at this point. Also remember - for any anticipated heavy changes, you can always take a manual snap beforehand. The snapshots all get sent to a clone on a raidz2 pool for backup, in case anything should happen to the ssd the root filesystem is on. Anything super important I have backed up in other places too. Now you have snaps every 5m for the past hour. Same deal, destroy the existing name, create the new one. Now you have hourly snapshots for the past 24 hours. Then just keep daily 2AM snapshots and use those for long term versioning and for zfs sending to your backup server.

This lets you have granularity for data you've been working on for the past hour and day, but avoids creating thousands upon thousands of snapshots that you have to clean up later. It's self-maintaining except for the dailies. Over time, docker managed to generate about 27k datasets that each had a few kb of data in it.I then made a list of all of these and destroyed them using a simple shell script, a task that took me about a week(!) and was bottlenecked by IO. I use a fast SSD, so even with that the number of datasets of 27k is too high. And docker does weird stuff. Developers are working on it and hopefully it will be as speedy compared to ext4 soon. IME there's never a direct performance issue, but if you let it spiral out of control you'll eventually get to the point where it might take half an hour or more to run zfs list. Not half an hour or more to finish listing them, mind you--half an hour or more before you get the first line of output out of the command. It's painful when it happens. It's painful when it happens This sounds painful. Based on the cron jobs it sets up, it does the following: 4 'frequent' (every 15-minutes) 24 'hourly' 31 'daily' 8 'weekly' 12 'monthly' So 79 snapshots per dataset. I don't have to think about cron or anything, the package's defaults are sane. Nothing I do is critical. You're only limited by space. All rights reserved Back to top.

Out of the box I had a noise coming from the inside and I only needed to adjust the belt by tightening a bolt and this noise disappeared. This is an awesome piece of equipment and I'm so happy to use it, the quality and feel almost matches a health club treadmill. I haven't purchased the iFit option, so I can't comment, but I will soon buy it and enjoy jogging in different parts of the world through google maps, but I will need a laptop to have the street view option since this treadmill doesn't display the maps on it's screen. Overall a great buy.My first freemotion xtr the screen went out. The second, the belt slipped as I planted when running a couple times (nearly snapping my knee in half.so it felt), and within 3 uses with this slip feel (at sprinting) the belt stopped moving completely at startup. Both treadmills had probably less than 15 miles on them. I rarely use a treadmill since i live in San Diego. However some of my circuit workouts make a treadmill a convenient option. I am 190 light on my feet and used the treadmills at 2 incline and 8,9,10 speeds. Again, only a handful of times. Electronics on one and the belt on another. I would pass on this brand or at least model! It worked relatively well for about a year before screen went out and belt started slipping. Called their customer support and the replacement part was ridiculously expensive and warranty had run out. Will never purchase this brand again. Programming includes 6 custom Memory Workouts in which you pick the goal, speed, incline, and time length for the ultimate, personalized workout, plus 28 pre-set Performance Workouts designed by a Certified Personal Trainer. Check out the most popular Freemotion models on sale to find a comparable model. You can also manage your profile online and keep track of your progress. The Freemotion XTr is a very nice machine with above average value — depending on the price you pay.

And now contacting the customer service team at Freemotion to see if it's something I can fix (as the sound is pretty loud and distinct, like it's not supposed to happen). Hopefully I can get a resolution and love it, otherwise I'll have to return the item.I put in serious mileage each week and I love to run. You should also know that I hate running on treadmills. However, this is a pretty good treadmill. I am just under 6' and I weigh 165lbs for what it is worth. The first month I had it(January 2010) I put it to the test and racked up 280 miles on it and it ran flawlessly. I have now owned it for almost 2 years and it still runs like new. (You can imagine how many miles I have on it now.) I use it mostly for the icy mornings when there is a ton of snow and the temp is near or below zero(Utah winters). The motor is reasonably quiet. The incline motor is a little louder than I would like, but it is still pretty quiet. The preset workouts are not for the faint at heart. They are faster than most and can be pretty intense depending on your fitness level. I have programmed my own and use those for most of the workouts. The longer track takes up a little more room, but that was never a concern for me. It doesn't fold up as well as others but I leave mine down all the time anyway. A full color display would be nice, and the mp3 hookup is great to have!! I plug in my music, turn up the volume on the treadmill and I'm good for a couple hours. I was a little skeptical of the 3.0 motor, but it seems to be holding up just fine. I would recommend this to anyone from beginner to intermediate runners. I race anywhere from 5k to 50 milers and this machine does the trick when I can't get outside on a trail due to the weather. The setup out of the box is quick and easy in 20 minutes you should be all done, the workouts you can create are awesome for people that like to custom there own workouts.

If there is, this is often a sign that you need a new belt. If the machine shuts down, there may be a problem with the motor or the machine may have a faulty circuit. Slipping Belt If you feel a slipping sensation when using your treadmill, it may be in need of minor treadmill repair. To fix treadmill problems associated with slippage, align and tighten the running belt. Belts can slip when there is too much friction or if the belt is over-tightened. To check if the belt is too tight, lift it in the center. There should be a gap of approximately two to three inches. If not, the belt is likely too tight. No Display When problems occur with the console display, the solution is usually something minor. To fix treadmill console displays, check the length of the power cord and visible wires. Worn batteries or crimped cords will need to be replaced. Treadmill repairs associated with treadmills with a magnetic pickup on the flywheel will include a thorough examination. The magnet may have fallen off and may need to be replaced. If the console develops static, the circuit breaker may need to be reset. Unplug the power cord for 60 seconds to fix this problem. Burning Smell If you are experiencing a burning smell from the treadmill, treadmill repairs may require minor to major fixes. Immediately turn off the treadmill and unplug the power cord from the wall. Common causes of a burning smell from a treadmill include friction between the deck and back or a short in the wiring, electronics, or motor. These problems could potentially cause a fire, making immediate treadmill repair essential. Non-Working Motor Fixing a non-working treadmill motor can be one of the more costly treadmill repairs an owner may run into. The motor may need to be replaced if it is powered at full speed, cannot be adjusted, and continues not to work or works poorly. Treadmills that power on at a full speed often run into problems with failed circuits. These erratic problems can lead to safety issues.

If may not be possible to fix treadmill motors. The circuit or motor may need to be completely replaced by a professional. Heated Belt Too much friction on the running belt can cause the belt to heat up and not run properly. Treadmills require lubrication to limit the amount of friction between the platform and belt. When the friction increases to a certain point, the machine is automatically set to power off. This may be the cause for the machine to stop working suddenly. Try to lubricate the belt to see if the problem is fixed. Ultimately, the belt may need to be replaced. It is common to run into some problems when learning how to fix a treadmill. While the problems mentioned above are common problems associated with treadmill machines, the solution is not always easy. Treadmill parts may need to be completely replaced before the machine can be used again. It’s important to learn how to fix a treadmill the correct way to avoid injury to yourself and damage to the machine. Troubleshooting the treadmill can help determine the point of failure within the machine. This will also give you the opportunity to fix or replace the part yourself or with the help of a skilled repair technician. Press Compete to start a race. To select it, hold down Stop while inserting the key into the console and then release Stop. You can change the platform cushions according to your workout. On the flipside, it’s recognition decreases due to a console that isn’t that aesthetic and a sound system that can’t raise the volume too much. This is a treadmill that we recommend, despite the entertainment flaws. There are 34 default workouts that will lead you towards your fitness goals. These workouts are designed to meet the training needs of avid runners and walkers. And as far as we are concerned, they succeed in doing that. It delivers a high-quality clear sound. And it is also compatible with iPod. It is easy to use and it keeps you motivated during hard workouts. It only takes one touch of a button to adjust speed and incline values, which has been a great help to us. First off, the warranty is not that appealing. Only 1 year for parts and labor is not something you may find advantageous for any treadmill. Secondly, the heart rate sensors were rather disappointing. It’s inconvenient to have so many workouts in hand, but not have efficient pulse sensors to check your heart rate. What is the problem? Unfortunately, we don’t know what the specific problem can be. You should contact the Freemotion Support to ask their assistance. When you call, have at hand the model’s name and serial numbers. Toll free number: 800-201-2109.Where is it. 0 out of 5 stars If you can get it from a provider that provides delivery and installation, I would reccomend it. Once it set up it's actually a pretty durable and pretty model but from my initial test run it sounds like something is raddling in the base (I unfortunatly can not figure out what it is).

If you suspect that magnetic interference is causing a problem, try relocating the fitness equipment.

THE CHEST HEART RA TE MONIT OR Tab Sensor Buckle Chest Strap Tabs Sensor Voltage surges, spikes, and noise interference can result from weather conditions or from other appli- ances being turned on or off. To decrease the risk of damaging the treadmill, always use a surge sup- pressor with the treadmill. To purchase a surge suppressor, see precaution 12 on page 3. Use only a surge suppressor that is UL 1449 listed as a transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS). The surge suppressor must have a UL suppressed voltage rating of 400 volts or less and a minimum surge dissi- pation of 450 joules. The surge suppressor must also be electrically rated for 120 volts AC and 15 amps. There must be a monitoring light on the surge suppres- sor to indicate whether it is functioning properly. Failure to use a properly functioning surge sup- pressor could result in damage to the control sys- tem of the treadmill and serious injury to users. Plug in the Power Cord The treadmill must be grounded. If it should mal- function or break down, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. The treadmill power cord has a plug with a grounding pin (see drawing 1 on this page). Plug the power cord into a surge suppressor, and plug the surge suppressor into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. The outlet must be on a nominal 120-volt circuit capable of carrying 15 or more amps. To avoid overloading the circuit, do not plug other electrical devices, except for low- power devices such as cel l pho ne cha rgers, into the surge suppressor or into an outlet on the same c ircuit. IMPORTANT: The treadmill is not compati- ble with GFCI-equipped outlets and may not be compatible with AFCI-equipped outlets. A temporary adapter may be used to connect the surge sup- pressor to a 2- pole recepta- cle if a prop- erly grounded outlet is not available.

The lug or wire ex- tending from the adapter must be connected with a metal screw to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover. Some 2-pole receptacle outlet box covers are not grounded. Before using an adapter, contact a qu ali fie d e lec tri cia n t o d ete r- min e w het her th e o utl et box cover is gr ounded. The temporary adapter should be used only until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. DANGER: Improper connection of the power cord increases the risk of elec- tric shock. Do not modify the plug—if it will not fit an outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. If you are unsure whether the treadmill is properly grounded, contact a qualified electrician. 1 Surge Suppressor Grounding Pin Grounded Outlet 2 Adapter 2-pole Receptacle Lug Grounding Pin Metal Screw When you use the manual mode, you can change the speed and incline of the treadmill with the touch of a button. As you exercise, the con- sole will display instant exercise feedback. You can even measure your heart rate using the handgrip heart rate monitor or the chest heart rate monitor. In addition, the console features twenty-four onboard workouts—six calorie workouts, six intensity workouts, six speed workouts, and six incline workouts. Each workout automatically controls the speed and incline of the treadmill as it guides you through an effective exer- cise session. The console also features an iFit Live mode that en- ables the treadmill to communicate with your wireless network through an optional iFit Live module. With the iFit Live mode, you can download personalized work- outs, create your own workouts, track your workout re- sults, race against other runners, and access many other features. To purchase an iFit Live module at any time, go to www.iFit.com or call the telephone number on the front cover of this manual.
